Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers Lifeforms SV-2 – Next-Gen Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer Keyboard
OVERVIEW
The Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-2 is a ground-up evolution of the acclaimed SV-1, combining the warmth, immediacy and character of classic East Coast analog synthesis with a powerful collection of modern sound-design tools. Its redesigned oscillator core features two Thru-Zero Triangle Core Oscillators with Thru-Zero FM, Phase Modulation, Linear FM, Hard Sync and distinctive Pulse Symmetry and Blade waveforms. Two voltage-controlled LFOs can operate at either low or audio rates, while a sub-oscillator and analog white noise further expand the sonic palette.
Beyond its oscillator section, the SV-2 delivers two Pittsburgh Filters with multiple responses, unique Character modes and variable overdrive, alongside six strategically placed saturation and overdrive stages. Dual ADSR envelopes, independent VCAs, a versatile mixer, Sample & Hold, spring reverb with tonal shaping and controlled feedback, and an advanced digital modulation tool provide extensive possibilities for sculpting everything from subtle analogue textures to aggressive, harmonically saturated sounds. Monophonic, one-button paraphonic and patchable full-duophonic operation add further performance flexibility.
The SV-2 is also designed as an open-ended semi-modular instrument. Its internally defined signal path means you can start playing without patch cables, while an 84-point patch bay and 24hp Eurorack expansion bay allow the architecture to be extensively customised and integrated with external modular equipment. A custom 37-key keyboard with Pitch and Mod Wheels completes an instrument designed to feel immediate and familiar while offering extraordinary depth for synthesis, sound design and performance.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Four-Oscillator Analog Architecture
Two Thru-Zero Triangle Core Oscillators, two audio-rate-capable LFOs, a sub-oscillator and analog white noise provide a remarkably broad analogue sound source. Thru-Zero FM, Phase Modulation, Linear FM and Hard Sync take the oscillator section well beyond conventional subtractive synthesis.
Innovative Waveforms
Pulse Symmetry introduces a second dimension of pulse-wave modulation, while the proprietary Blade Wave creates a dense, naturally chorused variation of the sawtooth waveform. Sine, Triangle, Saw and Random waveforms provide additional foundations for sound creation.
Character Filters & Powerful Overdrive
Two Pittsburgh state-variable multimode filters provide smooth, consistent filtering with Highpass, Bandpass, Lowpass, Combo and Random responses. Character modes reshape the waveform, while variable overdrive delivers up to 5x boost or 15dB of gain per pre-filter stage.
Six Saturation & Overdrive Stages
Saturation and overdrive are integrated throughout the signal path rather than being limited to a single distortion section. The mixer, preamp, pre-filter stages and spring reverb each contribute their own opportunities for adding warmth, compression, harmonic richness or aggressive distortion.
Flexible Voice Architecture
Choose conventional monophonic operation, engage one-button paraphonic mode or create a fully duophonic voice through the patch bay. This gives the SV-2 considerably more performance flexibility than a conventional monophonic analogue synthesizer.
Advanced Modulation & Envelopes
Two analogue ADSR envelope generators feature selectable short/plucky and long/relaxed response ranges, while two voltage-controlled LFOs provide low-frequency and audio-rate modulation with Linear FM and Reset capabilities.
Spring Reverb with Character
The integrated spring reverb includes a custom Tonal Tilt EQ shaper, controllable feedback capable of reaching self-oscillation and its own preamp saturation circuit for adding vintage-inspired depth and character.
Extensive Patching & Eurorack Expansion
An 84-point patch bay opens the internal signal path for advanced routing and experimentation, while the 24hp Eurorack expansion bay provides three power headers for integrating Eurorack modules directly into the synthesizer’s architecture.
37-Key Performance Keyboard
The custom-designed 37-key keybed combines a responsive playing experience with dedicated Pitch and Mod Wheels, giving the SV-2 the immediacy and feel of a traditional performance synthesizer.
Ready to Play, Built to Explore
The internally defined signal path means no patching is required to start creating sounds. As your ideas develop, the semi-modular architecture provides extensive opportunities to reroute, expand and transform the instrument.
