Violet Design designers and makers of professional studio and stage microphones

It is almost impossible to picture today’s pro audio and recording industry without technological innovations introduced by Violet™ microphones. For end users, Violet’s vast experience in microphone technologies coupled with graceful designs adds up to unprecedented quality. All Violet Design microphones are hand made in Latvia. Violet Design was founded in 2003 to facilitate the manufacturing and worldwide distribution of Violet™ and Flamingo™ branded microphones.

All Violet Design microphones are fully designed by Mr. Juris Zarins and manufactured under his personal control. He started his microphone business in the early 90’s restoring vintage microphones such as U47, M50, C12 and manufacturing related accessories. Soon he realized that the technology of capsules could be improved even further and in 1997 a new generation of capsules were conceived, the first of which was the JZ002.

Our main philosophy is to offer handcrafted microphones with a unique look and a superior sound quality, using innovative solutions in manufacturing techniques without loosing details of “that” vintage microphone sound. We believe that in the process of music recording the most important things are passion and inspiration and nothing should get in the way of these two. So with our ideology we trust in three simple points: excellent performance, easy to use, good design.

To continually improve the sonic performance of our products, we have invested a lot in our research laboratories and manufacturing tooling. In the past few years we have been announcing a lot of innovative technologies and designs to the microphone industry, such as the “Magic Ear” capsule, a new design of shock mounts as well as metal mesh pop-filters and last, but not least the Global Pre – the smallest microphone preamplifier body for vintage bayonet heads.

After an extensive testing and research period, we announced in September 2005 our latest capsule diaphragm technology “Golden Drops”. We introduced a new mixture of gold, copper and aluminium composite coating material, a layered diaphragm sputtering and variable coating thickness technique, thereby adding transparency, better sound commutation with membrane and reducing internal resonances and interferences.

At the heart of every microphone is its capsule – our hand crafted highest quality electrostatic transducers provide high output of the best quality audio signal and whilst handling extremely high SPL’s at the same time. The Internal Class-A transformerless discrete electronics are of the highest standard, providing exceptionally low self-noise and distortion levels. Additionally, our microphone housings are designed with acoustic principles in mind.

We are one of the few companies in Pro Audio industry offering 10 years limited warranty on all our microphones, because we are confident that Violet™ mics are the most durable in the market.

The applications for Violet Design microphones are wide and diverse – you can use them in a recording studio or in a sound reinforcement, in broadcast or a TV studio, in the film or video industry, in a project studio or home recording.

The Violet Design team always listens very carefully to suggestions made by end-users to ensure we continually improve the products.

  • Violet Design the Black Finger Microphone "The Finger" in Black or Gold is a microphone uses medium size, single diaphragm, cardioid pattern capsule and is designed for close to neutral, very detailed sound - with smooth, transparent highs, optimal presence and natural low end response. "The Finger" uses a single medium diaphragm transducer to provide detailed sound with smooth transparent highs, optimal presence and natural low-end response with a unidirectional polar pattern. "The Finger" has a unique body design with an integrated tapered reflector which reduces resonances, removes reflections and optimizes the microphone's cardioid polar pattern. Integrated damping of the transducer reduces stand rumble, outside infrasonic interference and mechanical shocks. The optional and unique FRR Reflection Ring (shown here) is a reflector disc which can be positioned at the head or anywhere along the body of the microphone to alter the polar pattern, frequency response and sensitivity. Positioning the FRR at the end point of "The Finger's" reflector alters low-frequency response and adds proximity effect. The FRR can also be used to separate the front and rear sides of the capsule and to reduce reflections and reverberation from reaching the capsule. Positioning the FRR on the capsule head's top produces a polar pattern closer to a half-sphere pattern with less coloration at different angles, less proximity effect and adds sensitivity to all except high frequencies. It is even possible to use 2 FRRs, positioning one on the top of the head and one elsewhere on the body for effect. "The Finger" is available in 2 styles. "The Black Finger" has polished nickel-plated hardware and a matte black body. "The Gold Finger" has polished gold-plated hardware and a matte black body. Matched stereo pairs can be special ordered. FRR is an optional unique reflection ring accessory which is used as a tool to slightly alter directional characteristics and frequency response by positioning at different points along the microphone body. • Violet-Design-the-Pearl-Vocal-Microphone-purple Violet-Design-the-Pearl-Vocal-Microphone-grey
The Pearl Vocal is specifically designed to be the ultimate condenser hand-held stage microphone. The newly developed medium-sized single diaphragm capsule provides high acoustic transparency and can handle sound pressure levels up to 144db without overload. The Pearl Vocal introduce a new physical design with a rear-ported spherical head and a special narrow tapered form reflector to reduce internal resonances and reflections and optimize the unidirectional cardiod polar pattern. A soft center band around the circumference of the head minimizes shock and handling noise. Rugged microphone construction and internal shockmounts effectively reduce stand rumble, outside infrasonic interference and mechanical shocks. The internal phantom powered preamplifier's Class 'A' fully discrete transformerless circuit provides high output, flat audio response and ultra low distortion and noise. The output connectors are gold plated for best possible signal transfer. "The Pearl" is ready for noise-free handheld or stand use. A flexible stand holder is supplied with microphone. FRR is an optional unique reflection ring accessory which is used as a tool to slightly alter directional characteristics and frequency response by positioning at different points along the microphone body.

  • The Violet Design Garnet is an electrostatic vacuum tube microphone. Its vintage sound is warmed by vacuum tube circuitry and an output transformer. The Garnet uses a specially designed large dual-diaphragm transducer, which can be adjusted to nine different polar patterns. The Garnet's multi-layer brass mesh grille keeps frequency response and sound details clear while its massive body construction provides low mechanical noise and solid bass response. An external elastic suspension shockmount is included to protect the Garnet from stand rumble, subsonic vibrations, and external shocks. Its Class 'A' fully discrete internal vacuum tube preamplifier provides high output, low impedance and low distortion. The Garnet has a large humbucker, custom-wound audio transformer that balances the microphone's output, separating it from external interference and providing additional analog warmth to the sound. A soft starting, smart power supply is included.

Violet Design the Globe Vintage Microphones are transformerless FET condensers, with large-diaphragm capsules encased in a small lollipop-style spherical headbasket.

Both the Standard and Vintage models use dual-diaphragm capsules, but they produce different frequency responses. The Globe Vintage is voiced for a “sweet and warm, vintage vocal sound,” via the company’s VD47 capsule — modeled after the tone of Neumann’s K47 capsule.

The VD47 (unlike the K47) uses two backplates. Both sides are skinned with 6-micron Mylar diaphragms, although presumably the rear diaphragm is not sputtered or wired into the circuit.

  • Made using all of Violet Design’s microphone expertise, The Maestro combines a dual-membrane VD27 capsule and a discrete Class-A preamplifier with transformerless output. The large-sized head ensures minimal internal resonances and reflexions, and as a result the capsule sounds more detailed and more “airy”.
  • Violet Design The Atomic Condenser Microphone is a warm sounding condenser microphone making it a versatile studio microphone, and a brilliant choice for vocal recording. This is a low-cost microphone that can compete against microphones in a much higher price bracket. The Atomic microphone combines a single-membrane VD21 capsule and a discrete Class-A preamplifier with transformerless output, and benefits from Violet Design’s unique design and assembly process.

  • Violet Design Flamingo ME Microphone uses an extra large ear-shaped transducer which provides a unique, resonance-free, warm and full vocal sound. The irregular shape of the capsule removes circular resonances and reflections. As a result, it has a warm, clean, more dense and natural tone without the typical round capsule resonance effect. "The Flamingo ME" is the top-of-the-line vacuum-tube studio microphones designed for high-end quality audio recording.
  • Violet Design Amethyst Vintage Microphone Vintage uses dual diaphragm capsule VD67 and is designed for that classic warm sound we know from the best vintage microphones. It has a little bit wider cardioid polar pattern. "The Amethyst" Series of studio microphones utilize capsules with 6-micron gold sputtered Mylar diaphragms tensioned and adjusted on precisely made brass backplates. They possess very fast impulse transient response without sound coloration or low frequency reduction, as well as the ability to handle louder sound pressure levels.
  • Violet Design Amethyst Standard Microphone uses a single diaphragm VD26 capsule and is designed for what we know as the modern sound - with airy highs, extended vocal presence, accented low end response and a unidirectional cardioid pattern. "The Amethyst" Vintage uses dual diaphragm VD67 capsule and is designed for that classic warm sound we know from the classic vintage microphones. It has a slightly wider cardioid polar pattern.
