This monitoring speaker establishes itself as a reference thanks to the precision of the stereo image, its capacity to reproduce each of the micro details of the audio signal , as well as unconditional respect of the original dynamics.
One of the major SM9 innovations lies in the fact of offering 2 monitoring speakers in only one and unique cabinet. The SM9 is thus composed of 2 monitors: a 3 way monitor and a 2 way monitor.
Two monitors in one!
One of the many innovations within the SM9 is the independent monitoring systems housed within the same cabinet. The SM9
A 3-way monitor equipped with a 1″ pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter, a 61/2″ midrange driver, 8″ bass driver and an 11″
passive radiator. All the drivers are made of the Focal exclusive “W” sandwich technology. This monitor delivers a frequency
response of 30Hz-40kHz (+/-3dB) at a maximum SPL of 116dB. This 3-way mode raises the SM9 to an absolute reference level
thanks to its uncanny neutrality, capacity to deliver even the smallest micro-details, and its inherent respect of dynamics.
A 2-way monitor equipped with a 1″ pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter and a 61/2″ “W” cone midbass driver . This monitor has
a frequency response of 90Hz-20kHz, allowing to verify mixes on a bass-limited speaker like:

The now famous pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter has been improved with help from the latest Focal technologies. Its
linearity and ability to reveal micro-information is unprecedented. This is due to an entirely new magnet structure that achieves
a mind-boggling 2.1 Tesla of magnetic flux. This has a profound effect on the tweeter’s ability to reproduce micro-dynamics,
which helps the engineer to dial-in compression and reverb.
The new “W” cone 61/2″ midrange driver benefits from great damping characteristics. The derived Impulse Response is simply
the best of its class. Midrange and mid-bass frequencies are then reproduced without any masking effect, ensuring perfect
The 8″ “W” cone bass driver was designed for engineers wanting to work with a full range monitor without the use of a separate
subwoofer (and its drawbacks, like positioning in the room and the not-always-so-smooth transition between sub and
The dual-magnet system that equips this driver (each 6.25″ in diameter, 3/4″ thick and weighting 6.5lb) generates an incredible
force (1.2 Tesla) for a driver of this size. The cone assembly is extremely rigid and light (a mere 1.23 oz!). The resulting acceleration
factor is a market-leading 400 ms-2 vs. (the industry average of 130 ms-2). Bass is then reproduced with unparalleled clean
punch, with no cone distortions, giving the engineer the confidence to make the best decisions over the entire bass register.
The massive “W” cone 11″ passive radiator, on top of the enclosure, works in conjunction with the 8″ front bass driver. Passive
radiators have 2 main advantages: they eliminate airflow noises inherent to bass-reflex designs and they extend the bass
response even in very compact cabinets. This flat-piston cone is coupled to the chassis via a negative half-roll suspension,
allowing very long excursions.
Input stage: flexibility in all-analog world
The low-noise input stage (125dB SNR!), is equipped with many adjustments features. Six detended knobs situated on the back
panel allow the engineer or the acoustician to compensate for some room anomalies and optimize the monitor’s response in
the room. Two shelving filters are available: bass (from 30Hz to 250Hz, 0.5dB steps) and high (from 4.5kHz to 40 kHz, 0.5dB
Three EQ filters are also offered. Bass can be adjusted with the 50Hz filter (fixed Q of 2). Midbass are adjusted at 160Hz (fixed
Q of 1), which also serves as a desktop notch filter to tame unwanted console reflections. The last EQ filter is midrange at 1kHz
(fixed Q of 0.6). These three EQs can be adjusted to +/- 3dB in 0.5dB steps. Completing the EQ section is a high-pass filter (full
range, 45Hz, 60Hz and 90Hz at -6 dB).
The input stage is also equipped with a complete set of protections. A sonically transparent limiter takes care of input levels,
while a microprocessor manages all power and thermal functions.
Three modes of operation: ultimate flexibility
Three buttons are situated on the SM9 side panel for direct access to the different modes of operations: Stand By, Direct & Focus.
Stand By mutes the monitor and puts it in low-power mode. The Direct mode allows the engineer who is not using the rear EQ
section to entirely bypass it, for an even cleaner and direct signal path. This feature is also perfect for acousticians willing to use
an external room EQ. Last but not least, the Focus mode (a Focal exclusive) activates the 2-way monitoring system.
Amplification & power : the driving force of the SM9
The low-level power supply is equipped with more than 2,600 uF, for a clean and dynamic signal reproduction with a perfect slew
The high-level power supply is equipped with 17,000 uF per rail to guarantee identical signal reproduction at any SPL.
The all-new, all-analog amplifiers developed specifically for the SM9 demonstrate the unwillingness to compromise. 600 watts
of class AB amplification drives the SM9 on three separate channels, respectively 400 W (woofer), 100 W (midrange) and 100 W (tweeter). These new amplifiers are halfway between class A and class AB in regards to the bias current.
The bass amplifier is equipped with six LM 3886 chips, known for their amazing slew rate (18V/ms) and very low distortion
(0.0012%, 20W/8 ohms). No more excuses for having difficulties adjusting compression!
Midrange and Tweeter amplification modules are designed around two STD 03 SANKEN® transistors driven by an LM 4702. A
combination that has an exceptionally low distortion rate (0.0007%) for the cleanest signal reproduction.
Such performance requires extensive cooling. That’s why the SM9 is equipped with a massive rear heatsink for a stable and
reliable operation of the monitor.
